Importing a car from Japan to Canada
Vehicles 15 years or older, counted from the date of manufacture, can be imported from Japan outside the RIV program. Quebec does not register right-hand-drive cars under 25 years old.

Eligibility
- 15-year rule (by manufacture date) for vehicles outside the RIV program.
- Quebec (SAAQ): right-hand-drive vehicles under 25 years cannot be registered.
What you pay
- Duty depends on origin: Japanese-built cars can qualify for 0% under CPTPP with proof of origin; cars built elsewhere pay the standard rate.
- GST on the value for duty plus duty, and the air-conditioning excise tax where applicable.
- Customs broker and port fees.
- Not included: provincial sales tax and registration.
